The chopped cheese and the Philly cheesesteak are two sandwiches that are very often quite disappointing, but I can’t help ordering one every time I see them on a menu. The reason being, when they hit, they fucking hit. Just one more spin of the roulette wheel, one more blackjack hand, one more cheesesteak! I’m due! I’m due!
Seeing the sandwich come out tightly wrapped in alfoil gave me high hopes that I’d be making back my sandwich losses. The cheese was perfectly melted and the meat looked good. Even the first bite was quite promising - the sandwich was well constructed with the right amount of sauce, juicy meat, and tomato and lettuce to ensure the experience wasn’t a dry one.
However, it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. The burger sauce ended up being a little too sweet for my tastes (I would have preferred less of it and more mayo), but the worst offender was the bread. Perhaps I’ve been spoiled by Creole Soul Kitchen and PJ’s Steaks, but this bread felt cheap, slightly stale, and chewy. In the few bites I had where the filling was the star, it was a fantastic sandwich. But in the bites with more bread and less filling, chewing through it was a bit of a chore. Overall, it was a decent sandwich, but next time I would rather get something on a burger bun instead of their rolls.
